On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Activision released details about the upcoming beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and the biggest news for players is that the issue that has plagued the series for six years will finally be addressed. This refers to the "update requires restart" message that forced players to restart the app immediately after launching the game to apply updates and patches, significantly slowing down their entry into the action.
Fewer Restarts, but Not Equal Across All Platforms
According to IGN, Activision explained in a new blog post how the frequency of this message will be reduced during the beta testing period. However, the experience will not be identical across all platforms. Players on PC and PlayStation 5 will see the message least often, and only if they are actively playing when an update begins to roll out.
On the other hand, owners of Xbox Series X and S consoles and the Nintendo Switch 2 will still occasionally receive prompts to restart the game. Activision, however, promises that after the full version of the game officially launches, this situation will improve on all platforms.
Beta as a Standalone File
Another significant change concerns the installation method. The Modern Warfare 4 beta will not be part of the larger Call of Duty HQ launcher, the aggregation app that has housed multiple titles in the series for years. Instead, the beta will debut as a standalone file, meaning players will not need to have the entire Call of Duty HQ app installed to participate in the testing.
This should result in a simpler and faster experience for fans, without the need to manage large unified installations. In addition to multiplayer content, the beta will, for the first time in the series' history of first-person shooters, also include a single level from the Modern Warfare 4 campaign.
Beta Testing Schedule
The Modern Warfare 4 beta begins on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM Pacific Time (PT) on all platforms except the Nintendo Switch 2. Players on Switch 2 will be able to join only during the second weekend of beta testing, which starts on August 28, 2026.
For those who want to be ready in advance, pre-loading of the beta content will be available a day earlier, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 9:00 AM PT. The article about these changes for IGN was written by Cade Onder, a freelance journalist covering gaming and entertainment content.
Although there is no direct Croatian component in this news, changes in the Call of Duty series traditionally generate great interest among Croatian players, especially given that it is one of the most popular FPS titles on the domestic market.
