Residents of Gornje Mekušje were jolted from their sleep last night by the sound of a violent crash. A BMW driver veered off the road on Gornje Mekušje Street and plowed into the yard of a family home, damaging several parked vehicles in the process. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
The owners of the damaged cars immediately called the police, whose officers arrived at the scene and conducted an investigation. Significant material damage was caused, but this is not the first time residents of this part of the city have witnessed the consequences of reckless driving. As one resident confirmed for KAportal, the street is a frequent site for speeding and showing off in souped-up cars, and it was only a matter of time before an accident occurred.
According to one resident, such events have become commonplace. "There's also an industrial zone here, which doesn't have many companies, but there's plenty of empty space, so every night groups gather here with their cars. There's racing, drifting—it's like their own private track from the ŠRC polygon for night driving and hanging out," the resident told Kaportal.
Residents are particularly upset because a similar incident occurred just five months ago. "And now this happened—a car nearly crashed into someone's living room. Residents are outraged; five months ago, one such driver smashed into a fire hydrant, and when the police arrived, he just laughed as if nothing had happened," he added.
He emphasized that he is not against young people socializing, but he cannot tolerate the unbearable noise and dangerous driving. He says it's not just ordinary driving, but "drifting and tearing around in souped-up cars," which becomes unbearable on hot summer nights when windows are open. Residents of Gornje Mekušje, as well as the neighboring neighborhoods of Rakovac and Grabrik, now expect concrete action from the police to finally put an end to the wild night driving that threatens their property and peace.
