Summary
  • Joseph Parker failed a doping test for cocaine after his defeat to Fabio Wardley on October 25, 2025.
  • Parker proved that the positive result was due to exposure to cocaine used by his own nutritionist.
  • UKAD accepted the explanation and, after a three-month suspension, lifted the ban, allowing Parker to return to the ring.
  • The loss to Wardley was retroactively changed from a knockout to a disqualification.

Former world heavyweight champion Joseph Parker of New Zealand went through a real ordeal after failing a doping test. According to a statement from the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD), the cause of the positive result for a cocaine metabolite was his nutritionist, who admitted to being a regular user of the drug.

Parker (34) failed a routine UKAD test shortly after his surprising defeat to Britain's Fabio Wardley at the O2 Arena in London on October 25, 2025. The fight ended in a stoppage in the 11th round, and Parker consistently denied knowingly taking any banned substance.

Nutritionist Admits Daily Cocaine Use

Key evidence in Parker's favor came on March 6, 2026, when he provided an explanation to UKAD. "Mr. Parker has provided UKAD with evidence claiming that his adverse analytical finding was the result of his exposure to cocaine used by a nutritionist he employed in preparation for the fight on October 25, 2025," read the UKAD statement as reported by Sky Sports.

The nutritionist, whose name has not been released, gave a startling statement. "The nutritionist stated that he is a regular user of cocaine and that he used cocaine daily in the week leading up to the fight," the statement continued. Parker had first worked with the same nutritionist back in April 2023.

Scientific Opinion Decides in Parker's Favor

UKAD conducted a thorough investigation, requesting additional information from Parker between April 14 and June 3, 2026. The turning point came on June 15, 2026, when an independent scientific expert submitted his opinion. It was concluded that Parker's ingestion of cocaine was "most likely" out-of-competition, i.e., before 11:59 PM on October 24, 2025.

The expert also specified the likely route of contamination in his report: "It is also my opinion that Mr. Parker's ingestion of cocaine could have occurred orally, from food contaminated with cocaine by his sports nutritionist..." However, he added a note of caution: "I cannot exclude the possibility that the finding of benzoylecgonine resulted from a trace of a larger, pharmacologically active dose of cocaine."

Suspension Lifted, Parker Returns to the Ring

Based on this opinion, UKAD lifted Parker's provisional suspension on June 22, 2026, allowing him to return to sport immediately. He was handed a three-month period of ineligibility, which is considered already served. Parker was also tested by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) on the day of the fight, October 25, and failed the UKAD test in the early morning hours of October 26.

Parker responded briefly to the decision, saying he would "return to the ring soon." Due to the positive test, his loss to Wardley is now officially recorded as a loss by disqualification rather than a knockout. This outcome is particularly bitter for Parker, who had been in excellent form before that fight with six consecutive wins, including victories over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang. In February, he was scheduled to challenge Daniel Dubois for the IBF title, but Dubois fell ill a few days before the fight. Parker then decided to risk his position as the WBO mandatory challenger for undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk's belt by fighting Wardley, a gamble that ultimately backfired twice.
