Two drivers were caught driving in the wrong direction at the Demerje toll plaza on the highway, as reported on Wednesday, August 6, 2026, on the Facebook page Prometne zgode i nezgode. The author of the post briefly wrote: "Two new wrong-way drivers today at Demerje," and the footage quickly triggered a flood of comments.
Citizens expressed disbelief and concern in the comments about such behavior on the roads. "How, for heaven's sake?" and "Where did these people get their driver's licenses?" they wondered. One commenter detailed the danger: "How can you drive in the wrong direction, with everyone coming at you, and you don't react? It's not a hundred meters or two hundred-it's about 2 kilometers or more in the wrong direction. They clearly believe they're driving correctly and everyone else is going the wrong way. I just don't get it."
The discussion also saw radical proposals for punishing such offenses. Commenters suggested: "Confiscate the car and license immediately," "Install spikes so that anyone entering the wrong way gets their tires punctured, and the problem is solved. Then fine them so they won't recover for two lifetimes." One of the harshest proposals was: "Revoke the license, permanently confiscate the vehicle, and ban them from entering Croatia for life."
The Ministry of the Interior (MUP) regularly warns about this most dangerous traffic offense, which is often fatal on highways. Driving in the wrong direction carries some of the harshest penalties in traffic law. For instance, driving the wrong way down a one-way street incurs a fine of 260 euros, while driving against traffic on a highway costs 2,650 euros. Exact amounts may vary depending on the circumstances.
