The Pula-Pola Traffic Police Station has announced a new preventive-repressive operation for Thursday, August 6, 2026. The focus will be on two pressing issues in traffic: improper use of mobile phones while driving and failure to use seat belts.
The operation, titled "Surveillance of Improper Mobile Phone Use and Failure to Use Seat Belts While Driving," will run from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Its goal is to enhance safety levels on Pula's roads.
The scale of the problem is evident from data released by the police. In 2026 alone, Pula's traffic police recorded a total of 9,701 traffic violations. Of that number, as many as 1,238 were for failure to use seat belts, while 761 violations were for improper mobile phone use behind the wheel.
The police remind that wearing a seat belt is a legal obligation for all passengers in a vehicle, not just the driver and front passenger, but also for those in the back seats. Special emphasis is placed on the requirement to transport children in appropriate child seats or booster seats, as standard seat belts are designed for adults.
In addition to not wearing seat belts, the use of mobile phones while driving is becoming an increasing problem. The police warn that this is a growing negative trend that distracts drivers, impairs their focus, and slows their reactions, making it one of the leading causes of traffic accidents.
Therefore, the police appeal to all road users to always buckle up before every trip, even the shortest ones. They urge drivers not to use their mobile phones while driving, and if it is absolutely necessary, to use hands-free equipment that allows conversation without using their hands.
