Croatian club football is going through an exceptionally fruitful period on the European stage. Dinamo's new victory in European qualifiers brought Croatia an additional 0.250 points on UEFA's national coefficient ranking, resulting in a significant jump on both relevant lists.
Thanks to the Blues' triumph, the SHNL advanced four places and now holds the 11th position on the one-year coefficient list. According to data published on Twitter by the profile Football Meets Data, only Latvia, Azerbaijan, and Bulgaria made a bigger jump than Croatia, with Bulgaria entering the Top 10 and landing in ninth place.
As for the five-year coefficient, which is crucial for determining the number of participants in European competitions, Croatia sits in 21st place with 24.781 points. We started the season in 23rd position, and we were even threatened with dropping to 24th place, which would send the national champion to the first instead of the second qualifying round for the Champions League. That negative scenario has now been avoided.
Ahead of Croatia are currently Scotland, Austria, and Sweden, while Romania is the closest chaser. There is a real possibility that all three countries ahead of us could soon lose one or more of their representatives in Europe, opening up space for Croatia to advance further.
Additional optimism comes from the upcoming appearances of the remaining Croatian clubs. Hajduk will face Žalgiris from Vilnius, while Rijeka has a duel against Ilves. New wins could bring an additional jump on the coefficient list and bring Croatia closer to the goal of 15th place.
It is precisely the 15th position on the five-year coefficient that brings two spots in the Champions League. Taking this season into account, the earliest year in which this can be achieved is 2028/29. Croatia has reached this placement only once so far, in the 2020/21 season, when Lokomotiva, as runners-up, played qualifiers against Rapid Vienna.
Meanwhile, Norway achieved two wins last night, with Bodø/Glimt and Brann securing their places in the playoff round. On the five-year coefficient list, Georgia overtook Northern Ireland for 50th place, which was the only change in the standings that evening.
