Croatian national team midfielder Lovro Majer (28) continues his career in Greece. According to reliable insiders Fabrizio Romano and Florian Plettenberg, his move from German Wolfsburg to Athens' AEK has been agreed. The transfer was confirmed on July 28, 2026, and the Croatian footballer travels to Athens for medical examinations the following day.

Fee and Contract: Two Sources, Two Figures

Fabrizio Romano was the first to report on the evening of July 27 that AEK had reached a verbal agreement with VfL Wolfsburg, with a fee greater than six million euros. The following morning, German Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg specified that the transfer was completed and amounts to exactly six million euros, making Majer the second most expensive player in AEK's history. The record holder is Mexican Orbelin Pineda, for whom 6.5 million euros was paid to Celta Vigo in 2023.

Plettenberg also revealed contract details: Majer will earn €2 million net annually at AEK, and the contract is agreed until the summer of 2030. The Croatian midfielder travels for medical examinations on Tuesday, July 29, followed by the official signing.

Two Seasons at Wolfsburg: 75 Appearances, 10 Goals

Lovro Majer arrived at Wolfsburg in August 2023 from French club Rennes, for which the German Bundesliga side paid as much as €25 million. In two seasons wearing the "Wolves" jersey, he played a total of 75 matches, scored 10 goals, and recorded 11 assists, but did not fully live up to the high expectations. Nevertheless, his transfer to AEK brings a new challenge in his career.

Absence from the 2026 World Cup

Although Majer was still in contention for Croatia's friendlies against Colombia and Brazil in March 2026, he did not make the final squad selected by the head coach for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. He has so far amassed 38 appearances and nine goals for the national team, and his recent omission from the World Cup likely accelerated his decision to change environments.
