The reigning NCAA champions, the University of Michigan Wolverines, are coming to the city beneath Mount Srđ for a preseason game against Serbian club Mega Superbet, known for developing young talents who later shone in the NBA, such as three-time MVP Nikola Jokić.
At this point, the biggest question mark remains the venue for this basketball event. The sports hall in Gospino Polje is currently undergoing energy renovation, so there is a possibility that the game could be moved to an alternative location, such as one of the school gyms. However, given the reputation and strength of the opponent, organizers hope that construction work will be completed before the planned date of September 1, 2026, so that Dubrovnik can host such a game in its main sports arena.
Following the spectacular national title win in 2026, the Michigan Wolverines basketball program underwent major changes, both in the playing roster and the coaching staff. Coach Dusty May, who led Michigan to the NCAA championship, left the university in June 2026 to take over as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.
After the coach's departure, the team recently achieved historic success with three players selected in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft. Morez Johnson Jr. was selected 9th overall by the Dallas Mavericks, where he will reunite with Coach May. Yaxel Lendeborg was the 11th pick by the Golden State Warriors, while 7'3" Spanish center Aday Mara was selected 12th by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Despite the departures of several key players, new head coach Mike Boynton Jr. brings an exceptionally strong freshman class to Dubrovnik for the 2026/'27 season.
