Summary
  • Meteorologist Marko Čubrilo does not expect an abrupt end to summer, but rather a gentle transition into a warm late summer.
  • After a hot start to the week, a brief cooldown with rain and wind arrives on Wednesday.
  • Along the Adriatic, very warm weather will persist with temperatures up to 39°C.
  • Late August will bring transient deteriorations and refreshenings, but still with many warm days.

After the heatwave that brought very high temperatures and numerous problems in recent days, many are eagerly awaiting the end of tropical days. According to the latest forecast by amateur meteorologist Marko Čubrilo, we can expect a calming of weather conditions and a gentle transition into a more bearable, albeit still very warm, late summer. Čubrilo states that no dramatic end to summer, a so-called "summer killer," is currently in sight.

Heat Returns Early in the Week

Until Tuesday, mostly sunny and increasingly warm weather will prevail over most of the region. Early next week will be very warm again, with daily maximum temperatures ranging between +33 and +40 degrees Celsius.

Brief Cooldown on Wednesday

A change arrives midweek. "On Wednesday, a cold front would move north of us, bringing temporarily increased cloud cover, a very rare chance of light showers, a strengthening northwest wind, and a cooldown," Čubrilo forecasts. This cooldown will bring fresher and more pleasant nights, and daytime highs inland will generally drop to between +26 and +31 degrees Celsius until the upcoming weekend.

Adriatic Remains Hot, Inland Warms Up for the Weekend

While the interior will feel relief, the heatwave will persist along the Adriatic, where highs of up to around +39 degrees Celsius are expected. For the next weekend, around August 17, it will warm up again inland, but not as intensely as in the first part of the month. Temperatures should then range from +29 to +36 degrees.

Long-Term Outlook: No Extremes, but Warm

Around August 18, a change in the synoptic situation is possible. "There are prospects for a change in the synoptics where the core of the anticyclone would shift over Great Britain, which would allow, along the eastern periphery of this system, more unstable and slightly fresher air to start moving toward us," Čubrilo explained. This would bring transient deteriorations and refreshenings in the last ten days of the month, but interspersed with very warm days.

"For now, no 'summer killer' is in sight, but rather a gentle transition into a very warm late, less scorching summer, where the heat would gradually ease," concluded Marko Čubrilo.

In short, after a brief cooldown midweek, summer continues. True autumn is not yet on the horizon, but neither is a return of the extreme heat from early August, at least for now.
