More than fourteen years after its premiere, the erotic thriller "The Paperboy" still sparks controversy. As reported by Kurir.rs, the scene in which leading actress Nicole Kidman urinates on co-star Zac Efron on the beach remains one of the most shocking in modern cinema.
In the film, set in Florida in the late 1960s, Kidman plays Charlotte Bless, a sexually provocative woman obsessed with death row inmates. The controversial scene occurs when her character tries to help the younger Jack (Efron), who is stung by a jellyfish in the sea. To ease his pain, she urinates on him in front of gathered beachgoers.
According to the film crew cited by Kurir.rs, the entire sequence was shot completely authentically, without any special effects. Director Lee Daniels later admitted that during editing he became extremely uncomfortable and seriously considered cutting the scene from the festival version of the film.
However, Nicole Kidman did not share his doubts. Kurir.rs reports that the actress called the director and firmly reminded him that he was the one who insisted on the scene. She felt that once the acting work was already done, there should be no pulling back or abandoning the original vision. Her stance prevailed: the scene remained in the film, and "The Paperboy" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012, causing genuine shock among audiences and critics.
Kidman is known for her fanatical commitment to transformations. Kurir.rs notes that for the film "The Hours," she learned to write with her right hand despite being left-handed, just to portray writer Virginia Woolf more convincingly. For "The Paperboy," she completely changed her physical appearance, accent, and posture, and later stated that she felt completely safe during the controversial scene with Efron, though she was taken aback by how quickly the footage and controversies flooded the internet.
The film's plot follows journalist Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) investigating the case of death row inmate Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) to determine if he was wrongfully convicted. The investigation involves his younger brother Jack (Efron) and the obsessive Charlotte, who hopes to marry her prison fiancé, dragging the entire story into a whirlwind of corruption, violence, and dark secrets.
More than a decade later, the scenes from "The Paperboy" remain one of the most controversial topics in the film world.
