The latest Spider-Man installment, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," has achieved the second-best opening weekend in cinematic history, both globally and in North America. The film, featuring the dazzling duo Tom Holland and Zendaya and distributed by Sony, has solidified Spider-Man's status as one of Marvel's most lucrative franchises.
According to studio estimates released on Sunday, August 3, 2026, the film earned $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend, equivalent to approximately £687 million. This impressive figure easily surpassed the film's production budget of $225 million.
The only film to have performed better is "Avengers: Endgame" from 2019, which grossed over $1.2 billion in its opening weekend. "Brand New Day" thus claims the second spot on the all-time list of most successful premiere weekends.
Exceptional success was also recorded in the North American market. While exact earnings figures vary, BBC News reports that the film took in $335 million in the U.S. and Canada, while the Philippine Daily Inquirer cites $355 million. In both cases, it's the second-best result in history, just behind "Avengers: Endgame," which debuted with $357 million in 2019.
The international market also responded strongly. The film was shown on over 73,500 screens outside the U.S., where it earned $572 million. China stood out as a key market, contributing a whopping $121 million.
The plot of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is set a few years after the events of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" from 2021, which grossed nearly $2 billion globally. In the new installment, Peter Parker continues his fight against crime in a world that has forgotten he is the masked superhero.
The film has received mostly positive reviews, with some critics calling it Holland's best performance as Spider-Man to date. This is also the last major Marvel blockbuster before the highly anticipated premiere of "Avengers: Doomsday," scheduled for December 2026.
This financial triumph provides a much-needed tailwind for Marvel and Disney, especially after some of their recent high-budget films, such as "The Marvels" and "The Thunderbolts," underperformed at the box office. Although those films covered their production costs, they rank among the lowest-grossing in the studio's history.
The success of "Brand New Day" comes at a time when cinema is recovering from the pandemic's aftermath. Projections for 2026 suggest that total North American box office revenue could exceed $10 billion for the first time since 2019. This recovery has been bolstered by other blockbusters, including "Toy Story 5," "Michael," and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," each grossing over $1 billion.
July's hits "Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey," director Christopher Nolan's vision based on the Greek epic, are also on track to surpass the magical $1 billion mark. Unexpected successes also came from the independent horror films "Obsession" and "Backrooms," which, with modest budgets, each earned over $390 million.
