At the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, the Croatian-Salvadoran pairing of Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo got off to a convincing start. In the first round of doubles, as the third seeds, they defeated Americans Robert Galloway and Evan King 6-3, 6-4.
A single break of serve in each set was enough for a smooth job. The first break came as early as the second game of the match, on Galloway's serve. Despite the Americans leading 40-15, Pavić and Arévalo turned it around and secured the key advantage.
In the second set, the scenario repeated itself on Galloway's serve in the very first game. The Croatian-Salvadoran pair raced to 0-40 and then converted their fourth break point. Throughout the match, they also won all three decisive points.
Pavić and Arévalo saved the only break point they faced at the beginning of the match. In the first game on Arévalo's serve, a deciding point was played, but the pair successfully fended off the danger. From then on, they did not offer the Americans any further break opportunities.
In the second round, the Croatian-Salvadoran duo will face the winner of the match between Czechs Adam Pavlásek and Patrik Rikl and Frenchmen Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul. If they advance, they would secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the prestigious Canadian tournament.
