Parts of Europe witnessed a rare and spectacular astronomical event on Wednesday-a total solar eclipse that thrilled millions of people. The prime viewing locations were in Iceland, northern Spain, and a small part of northeastern Portugal, where the path of totality stretched, according to CNN.
According to NASA, a total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on our planet and completely blocking sunlight in certain areas. This time, observers in Greenland and Iceland had the privilege of seeing the longest phase of totality, which lasted 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
The eclipse began in a remote area of northern Russia, where totality occurred at noon local time, CNN reports. This event is considered the most significant astronomical event of the year.
In Spain and northeastern Portugal, totality lasted slightly shorter, under 2 minutes, but the view was especially dramatic because it occurred just before sunset. In the Spanish city of León, for instance, totality began at 8:28 PM local time and ended at 8:30 PM.
During the event, observers could see a range of fascinating phenomena. As the Moon approached fully covering the Sun, sunlight streamed through valleys on the Moon's edge, creating glowing points known as Baily's Beads. This phenomenon is named after English astronomer Francis Baily, who first documented it on May 15, 1836, during an annular eclipse.
Just before and after totality, Baily's Beads disappear and give way to the 'diamond ring' effect, when the remaining point of light looks like a giant sparkling diamond ring. During totality, the Sun's corona-its extremely hot outer atmospheric layer-was visible around the Moon, and some observers could also spot the chromosphere, appearing as a thin pinkish ring.
For those outside the narrow path of totality, the sky offered a partial eclipse in the shape of a crescent. The degree of Sun coverage depended on proximity to the path of totality. The partial eclipse was visible in the northern United States, Canada, most of Europe, and northwestern Africa.
According to NASA, the partial phase of the eclipse lasted between 70 and 80 minutes, depending on geographic location. In Alaska and northern Canada, the eclipse was visible in the morning; in the afternoon in the northern U.S. and eastern Canada; and in the evening for observers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Africa, and continental Europe, where it coincided with sunset.
Photographers around the world captured stunning views. In Helsinki, people gathered in Kaivopuisto Park to follow the event, with photos taken by Kimmo Brandt of EPA and Tiago Mazza Chiaravalloti of AOP. The total eclipse was also captured in the Spanish city of Vinaròs on the eastern coast. Partial eclipse shots were taken by Stephen Chung of AOP in London and Toms Kalnins of EPA in Sabile, Latvia. Particularly striking images also came from the island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean, where the eclipse was photographed at sunset.
