Driving Without a License and Running a Red Light Led to Tragedy, While a Nighttime Bus Incident in Dubrovnik Left a Young Man Hospitalized
In the Split-Dalmatia County, the truck driver who caused a fatal traffic accident on July 23, 2026, and then fled the scene, is now in pre-trial detention. The decision was made by the investigating judge of the County Court in Split, following the proposal of the County State Attorney's Office, as announced by the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia (DORH). Meanwhile, just one night earlier, in Dubrovnik, a bus struck a 24-year-old pedestrian from Australia who was under the influence of alcohol.
According to the prosecution's suspicions, a 37-year-old Croatian citizen was driving a truck without a valid driver's license on Thursday, July 23. He entered an intersection on a red light and collided with a passenger car. His 40-year-old passenger, born in 1986, sustained severe injuries and later died in the hospital.
It is reasonably suspected that the driver immediately left the scene of the accident without providing assistance to the injured passenger in his own vehicle, Index.hr reports, citing DORH data.
After the suspect was questioned, the County State Attorney's Office in Split requested pre-trial detention, citing the risk of reoffending. The investigating judge accepted the proposal and ordered the 37-year-old into pre-trial detention, as confirmed by the County Court in Split.
A few days later, on the night of July 28-29, at around 11:25 PM, another traffic accident occurred on Ulica branitelja Dubrovnika. As reported by Slobodna Dalmacija, citing the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department, a 24-year-old Australian citizen, under the influence of alcohol, was crossing the road outside a pedestrian crossing. At that moment, a bus with Dubrovnik license plates struck him.
The young man sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Dubrovnik General Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. No further details about his condition have been released.
Both cases highlight a rise in traffic incidents in the Dalmatia region, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances. In the first case, the suspect faces serious charges of causing a fatal traffic accident and leaving the scene of the accident.
