Summer crowds at border crossings are usually synonymous with stress, heat, and exhaustion. However, one family at the Gradiška crossing on August 3, 2026, experienced something quite the opposite-an experience they will remember for a lifetime and one that showed how much kindness still exists among people.
A reader contacted the GPMaljevac portal, sharing that she, her husband, and their young children spent nearly seven hours in a stationary queue. What began as an ordinary trip soon turned into a struggle with a shortage of basic necessities.
The food and drinks they had brought for the journey were quickly consumed. The biggest concern was running out of baby food. Leaving the car to walk to the nearest store under such conditions was simply impossible.
"We waited almost seven hours at the border, and I can say that, despite everything, I experienced something the most beautiful a person can experience. We ran out of food and drinks, and we had small children with us. Somehow, word spread among the people in the queue that we needed help," the reader told the GPMaljevac portal.
The news that a family with young children needed help spread like wildfire among the drivers and passengers stuck in the queue. Within the next half hour, complete strangers began approaching their car, one after another.
They brought everything they had in their vehicles: bottles of water, juices, food, and snacks. Several people went out of their way to find exactly what the family needed most-baby food. According to the reader, about fifteen strangers offered a helping hand in a short time.
"People brought us water, food, drinks-everything they had. They even found baby food. I couldn't believe how many people got involved. No one asked who we were, where we were from, or anything else. They saw we had a problem and simply helped," she emphasized.
Although everyone in the queue was equally exhausted and eager to reach their destinations, many unhesitatingly shared what little they had. This gesture from complete strangers deeply touched the family and restored their faith in human kindness.
"I was very happy and moved. In times when we often hear only ugly stories, yesterday I saw how many good people there are around us. I want to believe in humanity because I saw it with my own eyes," she added.
Through the portal, the family also publicly thanked all the drivers and passengers who came to their aid at the Gradiška border crossing.
"I may not know their names, and I may never see them again, but I want them to know how much what they did meant to us. Thank you to everyone who brought us water, food, drinks, and especially to those who went out of their way to find baby food. We will remember that moment for the rest of our lives!" the reader concluded.
