In a traffic accident on Saturday evening, July 25, 2026, near the settlement of Prodol in Istria, a 26-year-old Austrian national riding a motorcycle was fatally injured, the Istrian police reported. The rider lost her life after crossing into the opposite lane in a blind curve and colliding with two cars.
Chronology of the accident
According to the Istrian police statement, the rider was coming from the direction of Pula on her motorcycle. In a blind right-hand curve, she was not keeping to the center of her lane, but at one point crossed into the opposite lane, where she struck a car driven by a 51-year-old man. After that impact, the motorcycle veered to the right and, in an uncontrolled motion, hit a second car driven by a 34-year-old man who was immediately behind the first car and had turned left in an attempt to avoid the collision. That car then also struck the rider's body after she fell onto the road.
Another motorcyclist also hit a car
At the same time, immediately behind the first motorcycle, there was another motorcycle with Austrian license plates, ridden by a 27-year-old Austrian national. According to police information, that motorcyclist also hit the second car, after which he fell onto soft ground next to the road. Details about his medical condition were not provided in the police statement.
Body taken for autopsy
The female motorcyclist died at the scene. Her body was taken to the Pathology Department of Pula Hospital for an autopsy. The identity of the deceased has not been officially released yet.
Road D66 was closed for hours
Due to the accident, road D66 from the settlement of Manjadvorci to Marčana was closed to all traffic from 8:00 PM to 12:10 AM. Traffic was diverted during that period. The blind curves found at the accident site near Prodol are particularly dangerous for motorcyclists, who, due to the nature of their vehicles, are exposed to a significantly higher risk of severe consequences in such situations.
Investigation ongoing
The Istrian police are conducting an investigation to determine all the circumstances of the accident. According to information available so far, the cause of the accident was an error by the female motorcyclist who left her lane. Further details about the course of the investigation have not been released yet.
