Anja Ljubojević, the former vice president of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska from the Croatian people, will have to pay out of her own pocket for the damage to the official vehicle she severely damaged in a traffic accident in early June. The accident occurred on June 6, 2026, and a breathalyzer test showed she was driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, although the exact amount was never publicly disclosed.

Ljubojević sustained physical injuries in the accident, but the material damage to the nearly new vehicle now falls on her. Although the car was covered by comprehensive insurance, like all other official vehicles in RS institutions, the insurance company rejected the claim for coverage, citing the fact that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Compensation Goes to the Republika Srpska Treasury

The RS National Assembly confirmed to the media that the cost will be fully borne by the person who caused the accident. "Damage resulting from traffic accidents on National Assembly vehicles that is not covered by the insurer according to the submitted claim shall be borne by the person who caused the damage, and the funds determined by expert assessment are paid into the RS treasury account," the NS RS stated for Nezavisne.

The exact amount of damage will be determined by expert assessment, after which Ljubojević will have to pay that amount into the budget of Republika Srpska.

Facing Charges for Reckless Driving

In addition to financial liability, Ljubojević is also expected to answer for violating the Law on the Basics of Road Traffic Safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Specifically, she is charged with violating the provision on reckless driving that came into force at the end of May 2026.

The law defines reckless driving as, among other things, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration greater than 1.50 g/kg. Since Ljubojević also caused a traffic accident, it is expected that she will be fined between 3,000 and 5,000 convertible marks (KM), receive a nine-month driving ban, and four penalty points.

A Case Testing Official Accountability

The case of Anja Ljubojević, a former official from the Croatian people in Republika Srpska, has become an example of applying new legal provisions on reckless driving to individuals in high political positions. The court's outcome is expected to confirm whether the penalty will align with the legal maximums for this type of offense.
