Croatia is experiencing the peak of a heatwave this morning, with the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) issuing a red weather alert for four regions. Temperatures will locally reach up to 39 degrees Celsius, and DHMZ is urging citizens to take protective measures, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
"Protect yourself, children, and the elderly," DHMZ said. Heatwave warnings will remain in effect until the weekend.
The highest warning level, indicating extremely dangerous weather, is in effect for the Zagreb, Karlovac, Osijek, and Rijeka regions. In the Zagreb region, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 37 degrees, with minimums above 20 degrees. The Osijek region will be even hotter - the mercury will surpass 38 degrees, and nighttime temperatures will not drop below 20 degrees.
In the Karlovac region, temperatures are forecast to exceed 37 degrees, while the Rijeka region is under warning due to highs above 36 degrees and nights with minimums above 25 degrees.
An orange weather alert, indicating dangerous weather, has been issued for the Gospić, Knin, Split, and Dubrovnik regions. In the Knin region, temperatures are expected to exceed 38 degrees, while the Split region is forecast to see highs above 35 degrees and very warm nights with temperatures above 25 degrees.
For the Dubrovnik area, DHMZ warns of maximum temperatures above 34 degrees and minimums above 25 degrees. In the Gospić region, temperatures will likely exceed 34 degrees, signaling the arrival of the heatwave.
According to DHMZ data, the warmest morning was in southern Croatia and on the islands. At 8 a.m., the highest temperature of 28.7°C was recorded at Dubrovnik Airport. Hvar followed with 28.6°C, and Mljet National Park with 28.3°C. Temperatures between 27.8 and 27.9°C were recorded in Dubrovnik, Lastovo, Split, Airport, and Komiža. Other warmest spots included Veli Rat (27.4°C), Osijek, Airport (27.3°C), and Makarska (27.0°C).
The coolest morning hours were in mountainous areas and parts of the interior. The lowest temperature was recorded in Gospić at 19.4°C. Slightly warmer conditions were observed at Zavižan (20.0°C), Pazin (20.2°C), Daruvar (20.5°C), and in the Plitvice Lakes National Park area (20.9°C). There was a difference of more than 9 degrees between the warmest and coolest locations at 8 a.m.
According to available information, the situation will be even worse on Wednesday - a red alert will be issued for nearly the entire country. During the afternoon, in Gorski Kotar, the interior of Istria, and Dalmatia, with moderate cloud cover, there may be only isolated showers. Wind will generally be light, with moderate southeasterly winds expected in the eastern part of the country in the afternoon, and southwesterly winds along the coast in some places.
DHMZ warns citizens to prepare for potential health issues caused by high temperatures, especially among the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. High temperatures could also cause infrastructure problems in some locations.
