Operation Storm, which represented a crucial victory in Croatia's war for independence and the foundation of its freedom, also marked a turning point in the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, paving the way for the Dayton Agreement in November 1995. That was the message sent by Croatian political representatives from BiH at the commemoration of the 31st anniversary of Operation Storm in Knin.

Representatives of the Croatian National Assembly (HNS) of BiH, an organization that brings together Croatian political parties, attended the celebration of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, Croatian Veterans Day, and the 31st anniversary of Operation Storm on August 5, 2026.

Čović: A Symbol of Freedom and Unity

HNS President Dragan Čović emphasized that Operation Storm is a symbol of freedom, unity, and the strength of Croatian defenders, and that it changed the balance of power on the battlefields in BiH. He also stressed its broader significance.

"This victory had a profound meaning for Bosnia and Herzegovina as well, especially for the Croatian people who, in the most difficult years, shared the same struggle, sacrifice, and hope," Čović said.

Ilija Cvitanović, leader of HDZ 1990, highlighted Operation Storm's crucial contribution to establishing peace and creating conditions for ending the war in BiH.

"Operation Storm is not just a magnificent military victory, but a lasting symbol of courage, unity, and unwavering determination of Croatian defenders. With special respect, we also remember the immeasurable contribution of Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina who, shoulder to shoulder with Croatian defenders, took part in defending the Croatian people and creating peace," Cvitanović said.

The Path to Dayton

After Operation Storm, conditions were created for the liberation operations of the Croatian Army (HV) and the Croatian Defense Council (HVO) in BiH. In Operation Maestral, conducted in cooperation with the Bosniak Army of BiH, a large area of western Bosnia was liberated. In the Southern Move operation, HV and HVO forces came within reach of Banja Luka.

These military successes, according to Croatian officials from BiH, forced the Serbian side to negotiate and opened the way to the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement in November 1995.
