Zlatko Dalić's plans to continue his career in the Middle East could take an unexpected turn. Although the former Croatia national team coach was mentioned as one of the main candidates for the Saudi Arabia job, another Croatian expert, Vladimir Petković, has entered the race and is reportedly in advanced negotiations with the same federation.
Vladimir Petković (62) is no longer the head coach of the Algerian national team. The Algerian Football Federation confirmed on Monday, August 4, 2026, a mutual termination of the contract with the former Lazio and Switzerland coach. The partnership lasted two and a half years and was cut short two years before the official contract expiry.
The Algerian federation announced it would appoint a new coach within two weeks. However, the Sarajevo-born coach, as reported by Sportklub citing sources close to the Middle East, should not wait long for a new role. Petković is already in talks with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
This development directly affects Zlatko Dalić, the most decorated coach in the history of the Vatreni. Saudi Arabia was mentioned as one of his main options for continuing his career. A potential deal with Petković could close the door on that opportunity for him.
Still, there is little reason for concern. According to Narod.hr, Dalić reportedly has offers from other parts of Asia. The national teams of the United Arab Emirates and South Korea are mentioned. Sportklub adds that Dalić recently confirmed his intention to continue his career in the Middle East or Asia, so if talks with the Saudis fall through, he will have several alternatives on the table.
It remains to be seen how this coaching puzzle will unfold in the coming days. Two Croatian experts find themselves in the race for the same position, and the outcome of the negotiations could determine the direction of their careers. While Petković has the chance to quickly return to work after leaving Algeria, Dalić has the luxury of choosing among several lucrative offers from the Asian continent.
