Croatia, especially its eastern part, is set for another extremely hot day today. The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has issued a red alert for the heatwave for Thursday, August 6, 2026, for Osijek and Slavonia, warning of maximum temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius.
According to data from Osijek Express, at midnight last night, around 25 degrees was recorded in Osijek, while the temperature of the Drava River was approximately 28 degrees, with a water level of -176 centimeters. However, today the mercury in thermometers will rise to an unbearable 39 degrees. In its forecast for the mainland, DHMZ has announced predominantly sunny and very hot weather, with light winds and maximum daily temperatures mostly between 34 and 39°C.
"Mostly sunny and very hot. Wind mostly light. In the second part of the night into Friday, a moderate to strong northeast wind will pick up. Maximum daily temperatures mostly between 34 and 39°C," states the DHMZ forecast.
Along with the red alert, DHMZ has also sent a serious warning to citizens, emphasizing that extremely high temperatures are expected, which could cause disruptions to certain infrastructure. They particularly appeal for the protection of the most vulnerable groups.
"Heatwave. Maximum temperature > 39°C. Take measures, extremely high temperatures are expected. Protect yourself, children, and the elderly. Follow the advice given by the authorities. Possible disruptions to certain infrastructure," reads the DHMZ warning, valid until the end of the day.
A respite from the unbearable heat is expected as early as Friday, August 7, 2026, when the red alert will be replaced by a yellow one. Although the danger from the heat will still exist, conditions will be somewhat milder. For Friday, DHMZ warns of a heatwave with minimum temperatures above 21°C, and thunderstorms and wind are also forecast.
"Heatwave. Minimum temperature > 21°C. Be cautious due to the expected heat. Possible health risks among the sensitive population, primarily the elderly and young children," states DHMZ in the yellow alert for Friday.
Relief with thunderstorms is expected on Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, but according to DHMZ's seven-day meteogram, it won't last long. By Wednesday of next week, August 12, 2026, temperatures could once again reach 36 degrees or more, meaning the summer heat will continue to be a major topic in the days ahead.
