The heatwave that had been gripping Slovenia was interrupted on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, by powerful thunderstorms that developed over the central part of the country. These brought a dramatic drop in temperature, creating stark contrasts between different regions within just a few hours.
According to data from the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO), temperatures in the towns of Logatec and Boršt pri Gorenji vasi plummeted from around 35 to just 21 degrees Celsius. At the same time, in the east and southeast of the country, values remained between 37 and 39 degrees, illustrating just how contrasting the weather conditions were.
Radar precipitation images showed the presence of storm cells at multiple locations, including the Julian Alps, the area above Cerkno, and in the Notranjska and Kočevje regions. Particularly intense storm activity developed over Notranjska, where a heat-induced storm formed between Rakek and Logatec. It brought heavy downpours and the possibility of hail. ARSO reported that 23 millimeters of rain fell at the Sviščaci measuring station in the past hour, but a gradual weakening of storm activity is expected over the coming hours.
The Environment Agency has issued a hail warning for several areas. A high probability of hail is forecast for Bovac, Gorenjska, the Upper Sava Valley, Ljubljana, and the Notranjska region. Although the storms have brought relief to parts of the country, the high-temperature warning remains in effect for almost all of Slovenia.
According to the ARSO forecast, Wednesday, August 6, 2026, will bring sunny and very hot weather with maximum temperatures up to 39 degrees Celsius. During the day, cumulus clouds will develop over mountainous areas, with isolated showers or thunderstorms possible there in the afternoon. A red warning for extreme heat is in effect for most of the country. A very high risk of forest fires has been declared for parts of the Primorska region, while a high risk applies to the rest of the country.
