Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe's key cargo hubs, was the scene of a serious security alert overnight. Traffic was completely halted after an unidentified flying object was spotted, and shortly thereafter, a suspicious item was found near the southern runway.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at around 11:40 PM. According to a statement from the Leipzig Police Department, several aircraft were diverted to other airports. Among them was a passenger flight from Palma de Mallorca that landed in Nuremberg instead of Leipzig.
Air traffic was completely blocked until the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 5. Flights on the northern runway resumed just before 2 AM, according to AP. The southern runway, where the suspicious item was found, remained closed for police investigation.
The German Federal Police examined the suspicious item, and a bomb disposal robot was used in the operation. A police spokesperson has not yet officially confirmed what the item exactly was.
However, German media outlet Bild provides more details. They report that it was a drone with an unknown object attached, equipped with a detonator. The key circumstance, according to the same source, is that it was found in close proximity to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.
Due to the emergency, the Antonov cargo aircraft had to abort its landing and take off again. Shortly after, at a distance of about six kilometers from the airport and at an altitude of approximately 400 meters, it struck an as-yet-unknown object. The aircraft was then diverted and landed in Hanover, where minor damage was found on its front section.
Police are now intensively investigating whether the sighted flying object and the found drone with detonator are connected. Although they emphasize that there is currently no immediate danger to the public, the Leipzig Police Department has stated that the possibility of sabotage has not been ruled out.
