On August 6, 2026, a drone equipped with explosives was discovered in close proximity to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, which was transporting ammunition intended for further shipment. NATO has confirmed the incident, and German authorities are investigating it as a possible act of sabotage.
Leipzig airport is one of the most important transport hubs for the delivery of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine. According to German media reports, the drone was fitted with explosives and a detonator and was found near the aircraft carrying ammunition. For security reasons, airport operations were temporarily suspended. The Bild newspaper previously reported on the incident.
Germany's Interior Minister assessed that the discovery of the drone represents a serious escalation. According to the headline from Dnevnik.hr, which reported the news via Hina, the incident was described with the words:
"This is not the work of amateurs". The minister added that the event points to a "new level of danger."
NATO headquarters confirmed the detection of the drone near the Ukrainian aircraft in Leipzig, as reported by the DPA news agency, citing security sources. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the latest Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, emphasizing the need for the urgent delivery of air defense systems.
German authorities are investigating all circumstances of the event, and there is currently no information about possible perpetrators. The incident has further heightened the level of security preparedness at key logistics points involved in military support for Ukraine.
