Croatia celebrates Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Due to the national holiday, most stores and shopping centers will be closed, but some facilities will still operate on adjusted schedules. Here is a detailed overview of working hours for numerous retail chains, bakeries, and shopping centers.
Among retail chains, Kaufland has clearly informed its customers that its stores will not be open on Wednesday. "Dear customers, to help you enjoy the upcoming holiday without worry, we remind you that on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Kaufland stores will be closed. Do your shopping in advance and without rushing," reads their notice. Plodine has also confirmed that its stores will be closed.
KTC has once again highlighted its long-standing practice: "KTC is the only retail chain that has not been open on Sundays, holidays, and public holidays since the beginning of 2020." For Konzum, Lidl, Spar, Interspar, Studenac, and Tommy, working hours depend on the specific location, and details can be checked on their official websites.
As for bakeries, Mlinar, Dubravica, and Pan-Pek will also operate on adjusted schedules that can be checked online. Among other specialized stores, Bauhaus, Emmezeta, Bipa, DM, Müller, Pevex, IKEA, Lesnina, and JYSK have published their holiday working hours, with information available on their websites.
Most major shopping centers in Croatia will be closed. Arena Centar, Pula City Mall, Mall Osijek, City Center One East, City Center One West, and Joker Split have confirmed they will be closed. City Center One Split will also be closed, but the Cineplexx cinema and restaurants within the center will operate during regular hours.
For West Gate, Avenue Mall, and Supernova shopping centers, it is recommended to check working hours before visiting. STOP SHOP retail parks have also published adjusted working hours on their websites.
Shoppers at Rijeka's markets will be able to make purchases on Wednesday, but according to a shortened Sunday schedule from 7 a.m. to noon. In accordance with Article 57 of the Trade Act, retail outlets are closed on holidays, but there are exceptions. At markets, the purchase of primary agricultural products and the sale of one's own agricultural products at stalls and tables are permitted.
The law also allows newsstand kiosks to operate, and they may be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on holidays.
