HGSS Members Hoist Flag on St. John's Fortress

On Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans Day, August 5, 2026, members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) Dubrovnik Station carried out a symbolic and demanding operation. They climbed the historic St. John's Fortress, one of the most recognizable locations on Dubrovnik's walls, and unfurled a large Croatian flag from it.

With this gesture, they paid tribute to all Croatian veterans who participated in the creation of a free and sovereign Croatia. The flag, proudly flying above the city, drew the attention of many citizens and guests, further enhancing the festive atmosphere of the national holiday celebration in the south of the country.

Greetings from the Fortress

Along with photos of the flag, the HGSS Dubrovnik Station also sent a special greeting to citizens through their official channels and Facebook page.

"Proudly under the Croatian flag, from St. John's Fortress, we extend our congratulations to all citizens on Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans Day - with deep respect and gratitude to all who created a free Croatia," the mountain rescuers said.

Preparing and placing a flag on elevated structures like Dubrovnik's walls requires exceptional skill and technical preparedness, which is yet another confirmation of the professionalism of the members of the Dubrovnik HGSS. They invest tremendous effort daily in saving lives and ensuring safety in inaccessible terrains.

In this way, by climbing the walls of the historic fortress, they combined their professional expertise with paying homage to one of the most important dates in recent Croatian history.
