Blidinje Lake and the plateau of the small church at Barzonja once again became the center of spiritual and communal unity on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. A large number of faithful from various Herzegovinian towns gathered for the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, continuing a tradition that spans 31 years.
On Foot from Kongora, on Horseback from Goranci
As in previous years, the highlight of this year's gathering was the pilgrims who arrived at Barzonja in different but equally impressive ways. A group of faithful from Kongora chose to walk, while horsemen from Goranci traditionally rode across the Gvozd mountain pass. Their arrival on horseback lent the entire event a special, old-world charm.
Among those gathered were the faithful from Široki Brijeg, Posušje, Rakitno, Tomislavgrad, and Mostar, who come to this mountain sanctuary year after year.
Mass Celebration and Folk Festivities
The solemn Mass was led by Fr. Jozo Grbeš, Provincial of the Herzegovina Franciscan Province. After the spiritual part of the program, the traditional folk gathering followed under a large tent. A testament to the good spirits and Herzegovinian appetite is the fact that 22 roasted lambs were consumed, along with countless portions of ćevapi and other grilled meats. All of this was accompanied by cold beer and drinks.
The "Šišović" team ensured top-notch food and service, hosting representatives of ABC Portal as well. Footage of the entire event, from the pilgrimage and Mass to the folk festivities, is available on that portal's YouTube channel and social media platforms.
