The prolonged dry spell and high temperatures are not only causing problems in the water supply for the population but also seriously threatening wildlife. On the island of Krk, the Dobrinj Volunteer Fire Department traditionally comes to the aid of game and livestock by filling ponds that dry up during the summer.
On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, firefighters filled a pond in the Hrbujica area, but the job was far from routine. Due to an overgrown access path, it was not possible to reach the pond with a fire truck. "We couldn't get the fire truck to the pond because of the overgrown path, so we had to improvise and brought the water using private tanks. Two of our members with two smaller vehicles and hunters participated in filling the pond. We also continued filling other ponds," stated the Dobrinj Volunteer Fire Department for Burin Rijeka.
This operation is just a continuation of weeks of effort. According to data from the Dobrinj Volunteer Fire Department, in the last month they transported as much as 220 cubic meters of water for the needs of livestock breeders and hunters. This figure vividly illustrates the scale of this year's drought, as well as the dedication of the firefighters who carry out this activity every year during the summer months.
In addition to reporting on their activities, the Dobrinj Volunteer Fire Department also issued an important appeal to citizens. They are asked to keep their yard areas tidy and to remove branches, trees, and other vegetation that protrudes onto roads. Such obstacles can significantly hinder or completely prevent the passage of fire trucks and other emergency services, and in crisis situations, every lost minute can be crucial.
