Summer Blood Donor Shortage: Two Drives in Tenja and Osijek

Donor numbers drop during the summer holidays, but hospital needs remain constant. Two blood drives have been organized to secure essential blood products.
In Tenja and Osijek, two voluntary blood donation drives are being held under the organization of the Croatian Red Cross Osijek and the Clinical Institute for Transfusion Medicine at Osijek University Hospital. The first will take place as early as Thursday, August 6, 2026, and the second the following Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The goal is to build up blood reserves during a period when donor numbers traditionally decline, while patient needs remain unchanged.
The first drive is scheduled for August 6 at the Tenja Community Center, located at Sveta Ane 1. Citizens will be able to donate blood between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. This drive is organized in cooperation with the Tenja Local Committee.
The second opportunity to donate will be on August 11 at the Osijek Red Cross premises on Šetalište Petra Preradovića 6. The drive will run from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with the Osijek-Baranja County also participating in its organization.
The summer months regularly represent the most challenging period for the transfusion service. Due to vacations and travel, some regular donors are unavailable. At the same time, the need for blood products does not cease, as the number of traffic accidents increases, and surgeries and treatments for seriously ill patients continue.
Blood cannot be artificially produced nor stored for long periods. The healthcare system relies entirely on voluntary donors. A single donation can help multiple patients, as the collected blood is separated into various blood products.
All healthy citizens who meet the eligibility criteria are invited to participate in the drives. To ensure the safety of both donor and recipient, a medical examination is conducted before the procedure. If certain blood types are in short supply, it can delay scheduled surgeries and complicate treatment for patients for whom transfusion is critical.
Donating blood takes only a few minutes, but for someone, it can mean a new chance at life.
