English Premier League side Newcastle United officially confirmed on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach. The 38-year-old German has signed a contract that keeps him at St. James' Park until June 2029, succeeding Eddie Howe, who stepped down last week.
"Newcastle United is delighted to announce the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club's new head coach," read a club statement as reported by Večernji list. Jaissle wasted no time, already joining the squad for pre-season preparations in La Manga, Spain. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, he was accompanied by his agent, Sofyane Benkheil of SEG agency.
Although born in 1988, Jaissle made a name for himself as a coach relatively early, leading Austrian side RB Salzburg from 2021 to 2023. He spent the last three seasons in Saudi Arabia as head coach of Al Ahli, where he left a lasting impression. In just three years, he guided the club to two consecutive AFC Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026, which put him on the radar for a Premier League move.
His departure from Al Ahli did not go unnoticed among the fans. Numerous emotional messages surfaced on social media, with one standing out in particular. "This farewell hurts more than I expected.
