Readers of Zagreb.info shared their favorite river locations for escaping the summer heat, and alongside the dominant Mrežnica, the Una stood out with 'the most beautiful beaches and sunsets'.
While Adriatic beaches are crowded, more and more people are seeking relief from the summer heat on Croatia's rivers. The green oases in the interior offer peace, natural coolness, and untouched nature, making them ideal destinations for day trips or weekend getaways. Zagreb.info asked its readers on its Facebook profile which Croatian river is the best for swimming, and the answers revealed several favorites near Zagreb.
Most comments highlighted the rivers in Karlovac County, with one name being mentioned far more often than others. The Mrežnica proved to be the absolute favorite, with readers particularly singling out locations like Belavići and Mala Švarča. "Mrežnica, Belavići" and "Mrežnica (Mala Švarča)" are just some of the comments, while one reader summed up the general sentiment: "Even though I live near the confluence of the Kupa and Dobra, I'd still say Mrežnica."
However, the Mrežnica is not the only star of the Karlovac region. The comments also included recommendations for other rivers. "Dobra, Kupa, Korana, and Mrežnica are all top," read one comment, while others added: "Kupa, that goes without saying," "Mrežnica, Dobra, and Kupa," and "Kupa in its upper course from the source."
Some readers, however, looked further east from Karlovac, toward a river that received numerous praises. "Una, the one and only! In Croatia and Bosanska Dubica, the most beautiful beaches and sunsets! Only 1h15 from Zagreb," wrote one reader. Others chimed in with "Una, the only one" and "Una, Hrvatska Dubica, a little over an hour from Zagreb," highlighting the proximity of this destination.
One female reader also shared a recent experience on the Una, specifically in Hrvatska Kostajnica. "A few days ago, I swam in the Una, in Hrvatska Kostajnica. It was good, but the whirlpools undermine the banks, so you need to be careful. But the best part was wading in the river and that there were no crowds," she described. Her comment, along with those about the beautiful sunsets, further illustrates the charm of this river, which, judging by the reactions, is serious competition for the more popular Mrežnica.
