A minor girl sustained minor injuries on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, when she was attacked by a dog on the sidewalk in Veliki Banovac. The animal was left unsupervised because its 51-year-old owner had left it alone, confirmed the Požega-Slavonia Police Department.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM in the town of Veliki Banovac, near Pakrac. The dog suddenly attacked the girl who was walking along the sidewalk and bit her. Fortunately, the injuries she sustained were not serious.
The police responded quickly and issued a misdemeanor citation to the 51-year-old dog owner. The offense was classified under the Law on Misdemeanors Against Public Order and Peace, as he failed to keep the animal under control.
Although the police did not elaborate on further steps in their statement, it is worth noting that the legal framework also provides for other forms of liability. If a dog injures someone, the owner can be held civilly liable for the resulting damages, which includes compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, and physical pain. In cases of serious injuries or gross negligence, criminal liability under the Criminal Code is not excluded either.
