On the 31st anniversary of the military-police operation Storm, celebrated in Croatia as Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, prominent footballer Ivan Perišić also showed his devotion to his homeland. He sent a clear message via social media.
On his Instagram story, he shared a photo of a fan dressed in a Croatian jersey holding a lit flare in front of the monument to Ban Josip Jelačić in Zagreb. Alongside the image, he wrote:
"Therefore, the homeland is you. And just as you defend yourself from all enemies, so too must you know how to protect, defend, and love the body called homeland."
This is a thought expressed by Prof. Dr. Tomislav Ivančić, known for his hagiotherapy. In his public addresses, he often elaborated on the concept of a person's three 'bodies', the physical, the familial, and the homeland. Ivančić saw their interconnectedness as the key to human wholeness.
On this occasion, the Croatian Football Federation also spoke out via its official Twitter profile. In the post, they said:
"Say 'here's to everything for Croatia...' 🇭🇷❤️ Today #Croatia celebrates Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders: we remember all the victims, proud of the victory and grateful for freedom! ✌️"
Perišić has been an indispensable part of the Croatian national team's success for years. With the Vatreni, he reached silver at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and bronze in Qatar four years later. There is also the silver medal from the Nations League won in 2023. So far, he has played 158 matches for the national team and scored 39 goals.
Since 2024, he has been a member of PSV Eindhoven, but in recent months there has been increasing speculation about his possible return to Inter Milan. He wore the jersey of the Italian giant from 2015 to 2022, leaving an indelible mark during that period.
Inter expressed their desire to bring him back last winter, but the Dutch club did not agree to a parting at that time. According to information known so far, Perišić himself is open to the possibility of a new stint in Serie A. It remains to be seen whether the Milan club will finalize the transfer this summer and bring the experienced Croatian winger back to the San Siro pitch.
