The Zagreb Police Department reported an unusual incident in Zaprešić where citizens reacted decisively and prevented the escape of a drunk and drugged driver who had caused a traffic accident. The 29-year-old caused a collision on Monday, August 3, 2026, and fled the scene, but he didn't get far.
The incident occurred around 9:15 PM on Prudnička Street in the Prudnice settlement. The driver (29) in a car with Zagreb license plates began overtaking another vehicle but failed to ensure it was safe to do so. In doing so, he struck the mirror of an illegally parked car owned by a 22-year-old with his right mirror. Instead of stopping and exchanging information, the perpetrator continued driving and left the scene.
The owner of the damaged vehicle and other citizens nearby did not remain indifferent. They caught up with the 29-year-old not far from the accident scene and held him until the police arrived. Fortunately, only material damage was caused in the incident.
The police investigation soon revealed the reasons for the reckless driving. It was determined that the 29-year-old was driving with as much as 1.54 g/kg of alcohol in his system. He also agreed to a preliminary drug test, which was positive. However, when it came time to provide blood and urine samples for detailed analysis and expert examination, the driver refused.
The perpetrator was arrested and placed in a special room until the effects of the intoxicants wore off, after which he was taken to the Municipal Court in Novi Zagreb.
The police sought a fine of 2,640 euros and a protective measure of a six-month driving ban for B-category vehicles in their indictment proposal. The court found the 29-year-old guilty and handed down a final sentence of the requested fine of 2,640 euros, but the driving ban for B-category motor vehicles was reduced to three months.
In addition, the police will file a report on the committed offense and a mandatory misdemeanor order for causing a traffic accident and fleeing the scene. The owner of the illegally parked car (22) was fined for his violation.
