On Monday, August 4, 2026, at approximately 4:15 PM in the town of Jasenaš, a 68-year-old driver under the influence of alcohol crossed into the oncoming lane and nearly caused a severe head-on collision. According to the report from the Virovitica-Podravina Police Department, the incident fortunately ended with only material damage to the vehicles.
The police investigation determined that the 68-year-old was driving a passenger car in the direction of Removac. In a right-hand curve, due to excessive speed, he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the solid center line with his wheels. At that moment, a 62-year-old driver was approaching from the opposite direction.
Thanks to his quick reaction, a direct collision was avoided. The cars only grazed each other's side mirrors, and no injuries were reported. A breathalyzer test conducted at the scene showed that the 68-year-old had a blood alcohol concentration of 2.05 promille, while the other driver was completely sober.
The drunk driver was immediately arrested and taken to police premises. Misdemeanor proceedings will be initiated against him for causing a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol.
The law prescribes a fine ranging from €1,580 to €2,910 for this offense. In addition, he will be subject to a protective measure banning him from driving motor vehicles of category B for three months, as well as six negative penalty points.
This incident once again highlights the dangers of drunk driving and the potentially tragic consequences that such an irresponsible decision can have for all road users.
