The Split-Dalmatia Police Department on Friday, August 7, 2026, released a detailed plan of special traffic measures ahead of the upcoming Feast of the Assumption. Due to the expected arrival of a large number of pilgrims heading to Sinj during three key periods, a series of bans and recommendations for all road users will come into effect.
The police assessment is based on experiences from previous years and anticipates increased traffic intensity on three occasions. The first wave is expected as early as the night of August 8-9, when the traditional youth pilgrimage takes place. The majority of the faithful will set off on the eve of the feast itself, August 14 and 15, with the culmination being the central religious ceremony on the feast day itself, August 15, 2026.
According to police information, the busiest route will be from the direction of Split and Solin, leading along the old Solin-Klis road, through Dugopolje, Križice, Dicmo, and Brnaze. Pilgrims will also arrive from other parts of Dalmatia and the surrounding area: from the direction of Imotski via the D60 state road, from Vrlika via the D1 road, and from Bosnia and Herzegovina via the D219 road. Additionally, groups are expected from the direction of Muć (via the D56 road through Sutina) and from Šestanovac (via Blato na Cetini, Nova Sela, and Ugljane).
It is precisely for safety reasons on the busiest section that the strictest measure is being introduced. The county road ŽC 6253, i.e., the old Solin-Klis road, will be closed to all traffic except for residents' vehicles. This ban is in effect on August 8/9 and again on August 14/15, starting at 8 PM and lasting until the need ceases. During this period, traffic will be redirected to the D1 state road and the Solin-Klis expressway.
The police particularly appeal to drivers to drive with extreme caution and at reduced speeds on sections where pilgrims are moving. Speed should be adjusted to road conditions and the increased density of pedestrians and vehicles, with mandatory compliance with temporary traffic signage and instructions from police officers on the ground.
Pilgrims are expressly forbidden from using the A1 motorway and the Solin-Križice expressway. The recommendation is to walk off the roadway whenever possible. If this is not feasible, they should walk as close as possible to the left edge of the road, in single file, and exceptionally along the right edge when it is safer, for example, on blind curves. Due to the nighttime hours during which much of the pilgrimage will take place, the police insist on wearing lighter-colored clothing, flashlights, and reflective materials such as vests or wristbands.
Drivers not participating in the pilgrimage who are in transit are advised to use alternative roads. All drivers, without exception, are recommended to completely avoid traveling on the D1 state road through the city of Sinj on the feast day itself, August 15. Police officers will be present on all pilgrim routes during the night, where they will manage and monitor traffic and take all necessary measures with special emphasis on protecting pedestrians and preventing the most serious traffic violations.
