The Teaching Institute of Public Health of Split-Dalmatia County issued an urgent warning on Friday for residents in the Prgomet area to close all windows and doors and avoid contact with smoke. The fire, which broke out at a recycling yard in Prapatnica, spread to a nearby waste dump, producing large amounts of smoke as various materials, including plastics and rubber, burned.
According to a statement signed by the 112 County Center Split, as reported by N1 Croatia, residents must absolutely protect themselves from inhaling smoke. "It is necessary to close all windows and doors and absolutely protect yourself from contact with smoke. People with respiratory issues must pay special attention to their protection and, if necessary, wear a face mask to prevent inhalation of smoke and particles," the statement said.
The 112 Center particularly emphasized that everyone must move away from the smoky area, except for firefighters and trained personnel.

"The fire is under control and we are keeping it within set boundaries, but due to the large piles of waste, we expect it to burn for several more days," Maretić said. The fire broke out on Friday, July 31, 2026, at around 6 p.m.
According to Dalmacija News, 50 firefighters and two water-dropping aircraft (Canadairs) were involved in the operation in Prgomet. On the same day, firefighters responded to a series of incidents across Split-Dalmatia County.
In addition to the fire in Prgomet, Dalmacija News reports on a fire that broke out in a restaurant on Obala Lazareta in Split. The call was received at 9:23 p.m., and five vehicles and 14 firefighters from the Split Public Fire Brigade responded.
