On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in the evening hours, an outdoor fire broke out in Mursko Središće. The flames erupted in the area of Josip Broz Tito Street, towards the Roma settlement of Sitnice, and according to data from eMeđimurje, it affected approximately 500 square meters of surface.

The notification of the fire was received at 10:39 PM, and teams arrived at the scene just six minutes later. Four firefighters with one attack vehicle and one smaller attack vehicle were dispatched to the location.

Inaccessible Terrain and Discarded Waste Hindered Extinguishing

Upon arrival, it was determined that the fire was burning in an extremely inaccessible area, within dense undergrowth and tall grass, across a canal. Due to the difficulty of accessing the fire site, assistance was requested from the volunteer fire departments DVD Peklenica and DVD Križovec.

When they reached the hotspot, they discovered a large amount of discarded garbage that was burning. They used a high-pressure rapid intervention device to extinguish the fire, and subsequently sanitized the area with backpack pumps. Firefighters extinguished the edges and dug through the waste to prevent the fire from reigniting.

Operation Ended After Midnight

Approximately 1,800 liters of water were used to extinguish the fire. The operation was fully completed at 12:05 AM, i.e., already on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Officers from the Mursko Središće Police Station were also present at the scene.

Firefighters' Appeal Due to Dry Period

Due to the extremely dry period, firefighters are once again appealing to citizens to behave responsibly. They advise citizens not to light fires outdoors, especially in forests and dry grasslands. With cautious behavior, it is possible to avoid fires and protect the environment, property, and people.
