Police in Čakovec arrested a 29-year-old man on Sunday, August 2, 2026, after a younger male reported being threatened by him. Just a few hours after the report was filed in the afternoon, the suspect was located and taken into custody.
Following an order from the Varaždin County Court, police conducted a search of the apartment and other premises used by the suspect. During the search, they found a semi-automatic rifle, a Zastava M59, commonly known as a "papovka," in 7.62mm caliber. Along with the rifle, five magazines and a total of 129 rounds of ammunition were also discovered.
The criminal investigation established that the 29-year-old committed the criminal offenses of threats and illegal possession, manufacturing, and procurement of weapons and explosive substances. The Međimurje police, along with filing a criminal complaint with the competent state attorney's office, handed the suspect over to the detention supervisor of the Međimurje Police Department.

The further fate of the suspect will be decided by the competent prosecutors, who may request pretrial detention or release him to defend himself from liberty.
