Summary
  • Health Minister Irena Hrstić visited Pula General Hospital on Monday, August 3, 2026.
  • Pula General Hospital handled a record 5,800 patients in July, 700 more than last year.
  • Helicopter and maritime emergency services had more than 5,600 interventions in two years.
  • The procurement of a new CT and MRI was announced, along with the possible relocation of the tourist clinic closer to the hospital.

During the visit, accompanied by Director Andrej Angelini and his deputy Daniela Fabris-Vitković, the Minister toured key departments. The Emergency Department (ED), the Department of Nuclear Medicine, and the hospital pharmacy were in focus, where she was presented with the latest investments in equipment and improvements in work organization.

July brought a record number of patients

Roberto Licul, head technician of the emergency department, provided concrete figures confirming the exceptional pressure on emergency services. "This year has truly been the strongest in the five years we've been tracking - the highest in terms of patient arrivals. In July, Pula General Hospital handled 5,800 patients, which is nearly 700 more than last year," Licul stated.

Minister Hrstić emphasized that this is part of a broader trend of increasing burden on emergency medical services and tourist clinics. She particularly highlighted the role of specialized emergency services.

An intervention by helicopter or boat every three hours

"The helicopter emergency service and the maritime emergency service are certainly something that adds value to providing emergency medical assistance, not only during the tourist season but every year," the Minister said. She added that over the past two years, these services have recorded more than 5,600 interventions.

"When you look at those two years, it works out to a helicopter taking off or a boat being on emergency duty every three hours," Hrstić explained, emphasizing the continuous availability and rapid response of these services.

New equipment and future plans

In addition to reviewing the current situation, further improvements were discussed. The Minister announced that the Ministry of Health has already funded the procurement of a new fume hood for radiopharmaceutical preparation at the Department of Nuclear Medicine. Plans also include the imminent replacement of the existing CT scanner and the acquisition of a new MRI machine.

One of the topics was the possibility of relocating the tourist clinic to the immediate vicinity of the hospital. The goal of this potential reorganization is to reduce unnecessary patient transfers between different locations and thereby further relieve the emergency department.
