Hajduk's footballers have taken a huge step towards qualifying for the Conference League play-offs. In the first leg of the third qualifying round, on Thursday, August 7, 2026, they convincingly defeated Lithuanian side Žalgiris 5:2 in Vilnius. One of the heroes of the big win was Michele Šego, who scored two goals and, after the match, highlighted the importance of the result for the club's television.
Šego put Hajduk ahead in the 5th minute, converting a penalty for 1:0. His second goal wasn't long in coming, in the 44th minute, he found the back of the net again, confirming his excellent form. The Split side added three more goals by the end of the match for a final score of 5:2, ending a six-year winless streak away from home in European competitions.
The young attacker didn't hide his satisfaction after the match. "Thank God for the win; after six years, we've finally secured an away victory in Europe. Five goals, everything is great, we have a good result going into the second leg, and we'll confirm it in Split," Šego said for the club's television.
He also commented on the team's approach, which was key to the high-scoring win. "We talked a lot these days about what we needed to improve, and I think it showed. We raised our aggression, we fought for each other. I believe that's the only right way, and only together can we achieve something," he added.
Šego scored his second goal from a free kick, similar to his earlier strike against Pafos. When asked about the secret behind his set-piece mastery, he briefly replied: "Hard work, investing in yourself, and it pays off, thank God."
Despite the euphoria, focus quickly returns to domestic duties. Hajduk hosts Istra at Poljud on Sunday in the 2nd round of the SuperSport HNL. "Next is recovery, the trip back, and the match," Šego concluded.
The return leg against Žalgiris is scheduled for August 13, 2026, in Split, where Hajduk will try to confirm their place in the next stage of the competition in front of their fans.
