The public utility company "Vodovod i kanalizacija" d.o.o. from Široki Brijeg issued an urgent appeal on August 5, 2026, to all users of the city's water supply system. Due to a prolonged dry spell and a complete absence of precipitation, water reserves at the key Borak spring have reached critically low levels. The company is calling on residents to use water solely for essential purposes and to conserve it in order to avoid drastic measures.
To maintain a stable supply of drinking water, the utility has issued specific recommendations. Until further notice, residents are asked not to use water from the public network for watering gardens, lawns, or agricultural areas, nor for filling swimming pools, or washing cars, yards, and streets. It is emphasized that water is currently intended exclusively for drinking and basic hygiene needs.
If consumption is not urgently reduced, the utility company warns that it will introduce water supply cuts in certain neighborhoods and city zones. Additionally, on-call teams will conduct field patrols and shut off zone valves for irresponsible consumers. Residents are urged to show solidarity, and any observed non-essential use of water or illegal connections can be anonymously reported via phone, email, or the utility's social media channels.
