In a traffic accident that occurred today at 7:45 AM on the A-1 highway near the Vukova Gorica rest area heading south, a 34-year-old driver from Zagreb with initials M.K. was killed. Two passengers from the same vehicle, a woman (29) and a man (31), were transported to Zagreb University Hospital Centre with serious injuries.
"A Volkswagen Passat vehicle left the roadway for reasons yet to be determined. We are conducting a detailed analysis of brake marks and crime scene investigation to establish all circumstances," Zagreb Traffic Police spokesperson Marija Horvat told 5MIN.hr.
Third Fatal Accident at Same Location
This tragedy marks the third fatal traffic accident on the highway section near Vukova Gorica in 2024. In March, one person died in a similar accident, while another fatal accident was recorded at the same kilometer in June.
"This section of the highway is characterized by a gentle curve and accidents often occur due to inappropriate speed or driver fatigue," explains traffic expert Damir Šoštarić. According to HAC data, a total of 23 traffic accidents have been recorded on this section over the past five years.
Condition of Injured Stable
Doctors at Zagreb University Hospital Centre reported that the condition of both injured passengers is stable despite serious injuries. "The woman has broken ribs and internal bleeding, while the man has severe head trauma. Both are out of life-threatening danger," confirmed Dr. Ante Miletić from the Trauma Clinic.
Traffic on the A-1 highway heading south was completely stopped until 10:30 AM due to the investigation and vehicle removal. Police call on all traffic participants for maximum caution, especially on sections where accidents frequently occur.
