Croatia continues to grapple with extreme heat affecting the entire country. According to data from the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ), on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 2 PM, the highest temperature was recorded at Osijek Airport, where the thermometer hit 38.9 degrees Celsius.
Other parts of the country came very close to that figure. Thermometers in Beli Manastir showed 38.6, Brestovac 38.5, while Požega and Zagreb's Grič measured 38.3 degrees. Exactly 38.0 degrees was recorded in Gradište and Đakovo.
The rest of Croatia was not spared from exceptionally high values either. In Osijek, or more precisely Čepin, and in Lipik, the temperature was 37.9, Virovitica 37.7, Pazin 37.6, and Bosiljevo 37.5. Knin recorded 37.4 degrees, Vukovar at the Grabovo measuring station 37.3, and Gorice near Nova Gradiška 37.2 degrees.
Joining the list of hot spots are Sinj and Daruvar with 37.1 degrees. Exactly 37 degrees Celsius was measured in Imotski, Bakar, Slatina, and Krapina, confirming that the heatwave has spared no corner of the country.
Due to the extremely dangerous heatwave, DHMZ has issued a red weather alert for all eight meteorological regions. The rest of the day is expected to be mostly sunny and very hot, with daily highs ranging from 34 to 39 degrees.
Even the night will not bring significant relief. Tropical nights will continue along the Adriatic coast, with minimum temperatures locally reaching up to 26 degrees. With stronger cloud development, isolated showers are possible only in Gorski Kotar and the interior of Istria and Dalmatia.
Thursday, August 6, 2026, will not bring any relief either. DHMZ has again issued a red weather alert for the entire country. In the interior, morning temperatures will range from 17 to 22 degrees, while the Adriatic will continue to experience tropical nights with temperatures between 22 and 27 degrees. Most areas will see daytime highs between 34 and 39 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny, with brief afternoon showers possible locally in the interior of Istria, Gorski Kotar, and the Dalmatian hinterland.
Late Thursday and into Friday night, a change in weather is expected. In the interior, a moderate to strong northeast wind will blow, while the northern Adriatic will experience a strong bora wind. This change will mark the end of the prolonged heatwave and bring a gradual drop in temperatures.
