Tomašević Lays Wreaths at Mirogoj

Ahead of tomorrow's observance of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Veterans, commemorations were held across Croatia to honor the fallen, the missing, and all participants of the Homeland War. The central Zagreb delegation, led by Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, laid wreaths at the Mirogoj City Cemetery, while similar ceremonies took place in Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Littoral.
Mayor Tomašević led the City of Zagreb delegation that laid wreaths on August 4, 2026, at three locations at Mirogoj: at the memorial "Voice of Croatian Victims - Wall of Pain," at the Central Cross in the Alley of Fallen Croatian Veterans, and at the "Cenotaph" monument at the Crematorium. Representatives of associations stemming from the Homeland War also joined the ceremony.
"Every year we gather here at Mirogoj to primarily express gratitude and pay tribute to all Croatian veterans of the Homeland War, especially the fallen and missing veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the Republic of Croatia," Tomašević stated at the Wall of Pain, as reported by Večernji list.
Tomislav Tomašević also announced that, as in previous years, he will attend the main ceremony marking Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans Day in Knin on Wednesday.
On the same day, wreaths were laid and candles lit in Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Littoral in memory of Croatian veterans and civilian victims of the Homeland War. At the Memorial Cross at Boninovo, Deputy Mayor Velibor Puzović and City Councilor Katarina Doršner paid tribute on behalf of the City of Dubrovnik.
The commemoration was also attended by State Secretary Zrinka Raguž of the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds, members of the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Administration, representatives of Homeland War associations, families of fallen veterans, and many citizens.
Wreaths and candles were also laid at the monument at Vjetreni Mlin in the Dubrovnik Littoral, where Ante Vojvodić, Head of the Administrative Department for Budget, Finance, and Collection, and Ivan Bajić, Head of the Internal Audit Service, paid tribute on behalf of the City of Dubrovnik.
Ahead of the national holiday, Croatian female veterans also shared their memories. Academician Mirna Šitum, a member of the 4th Guards Brigade, and Croatian veteran Marija Lišnić appeared on HRT's Studio 4 program, where they highlighted the contribution and sacrifice of women in the Homeland War.
Mirna Šitum described the strong emotions that stir in her every year on Victory Day. "As long as I get goosebumps, I'll know I did the right thing," Šitum said, as reported by Hrvatska uživo.
