Chief State Attorney Ivan Turudić stated on Monday during the RTL Danas show that his office is currently handling a major case that touches on national security. Although he could not provide details, he disclosed that it involves sophisticated methods of committing criminal offenses.

"We currently have a major case. Initially, it wasn't particularly promising, as we say, and it now involves national security. We are working on it very intensively. We don't know what tomorrow brings," Turudić told RTL Danas.

Pollution in Lika: 'Findings Are Not Great'

Commenting on the case of illegal waste disposal in Lika, where the married couple Šincek are suspects, Turudić confirmed that the case is in the investigation phase. An extensive expert assessment by the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering has been completed, totaling around 350 pages including supplements. His succinct comment on the results was: "the findings are not great."

He added that pollution has been confirmed in the Lika area and that there is a legal possibility to publish the expert assessment before the conclusion of the court proceedings if it is in the public interest. He believes the public has the right to know the extent and consequences of the pollution.

Pavlek's Extradition and Hajduk Investigation

He also addressed the case of Vedran Pavlek, for whom an international arrest warrant has been issued. Turudić said that the process of his extradition from Kazakhstan is underway, but Pavlek is opposing it and using all available legal remedies. The procedure is being conducted through international legal assistance and Interpol. From the evidence, which includes mobile phones and laptops, around 120,000 documents need to be reviewed.

He also confirmed that USKOK is conducting inquiries related to the football club Hajduk, emphasizing that it is a routine check following received reports. He dismissed allegations of a conflict of interest due to his fan sympathies, stating that he would act the same way towards Hajduk, Dinamo, or any other institution.

Rejects Miletić's Accusations, Comments on Kerum's Arrest

He also touched on the case of the beach concession in front of the Costabella hotel in Rijeka, granted in 2015 for 30 years. He rejected claims by MP Marino Miletić that he is protecting politically connected individuals from HDZ and SDP, calling them "ridiculous."

Commenting on the recent arrest of Željko Kerum, he said he does not know whether Kerum had knowledge of his impending arrest, but also that social media posts do not constitute disclosure of the content of evidentiary actions. Regarding the quick release of some detainees, he explained that the duration of custody depends on the circumstances of each individual case.

The Collapse of the EPPO Narrative

Telegram.hr recalls that Turudić, back in February 2024, the day after being elected by the Parliament, expressed skepticism towards the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO). At that time, he told N1 television: "I am not sure we should have established that body. There are a number of European countries that do not have it. They function, and I think the situation there is better."

However, in the meantime, that "number" has been reduced to just five countries, of which Poland, Sweden, and Hungary have already joined EPPO, and Ireland could do so next year. Only Denmark remains. Telegram.hr analyzes that the goal of challenging EPPO was to stop European prosecutors in Croatia, recalling the cases of former minister Gabrijela Žalac and former health minister Vili Beroš, where the DORH took over the investigation from EPPO.
