On this day, August 3, 2026, we mark 31 years since one of the most harrowing events in Dubrovnik's recent history. In the afternoon hours of August 3, 1995, a shell fired during an attack by Serbian and Montenegrin aggressors landed on the beach at Veliki Zaton, cutting short three young lives and forever altering the fates of their families.
What was supposed to be an ordinary summer afternoon spent swimming turned into an unprecedented tragedy. In a random shelling of the Dubrovnik area, which occurred after a long period of ceasefire and just before the start of the military-police operation Operation Storm, the final shells fell precisely on Veliki Zaton.
Killed were 24-year-old Frano Goić, a member of the 163rd Brigade of the Croatian Army, 25-year-old Danijela Spajić, and 17-year-old Orsat Domaćin, all from Dubrovnik. In the same attack, Orsat's friends Romana Tomić, Lukša Pavličević, and Nikša Matić were seriously wounded.
The news of the deaths of three young people, whose futures were violently taken in the final months of the Homeland War, draped Dubrovnik in black. The city mourned its fellow citizens, and the memory of Frano, Danijela, and Orsat remains a lasting reminder of the price of freedom.
According to data reported by Dulist, the scale of civilian suffering in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County during the Homeland War is devastating. Ninety-two civilians laid down their lives on the altar of the homeland, 15 of whom were children under the age of 18. Additionally, the number of civilian invalids exceeds 140, with 36 of them being minors at the time of their injury.
These statistics bear witness to the immense suffering endured by the people of this region, and the tragedy at Veliki Zaton stands as one of its most painful symbols.
