On Monday, August 3, 2026, police arrested a 46-year-old man from Vitez for a threatening Facebook post in which he glorified crimes against Croats in central Bosnia and threatened further violence, including against their grandchildren. The case has caused alarm within the Croatian community.
The suspect, identified by the initials A. H., born in 1980, wrote in his post: "We wiped you Ustashas out of BiH, especially we slaughtered you in central Bosnia (...) and we will slaughter your grandchildren too." He added, "Everything is ours and Europe will be too," referring to Croats as "Croatized Vlachs."
The news quickly spread through social platforms and web portals, after which the incident was reported to the authorities. The Office of the Director of Police of the Central Bosnia Canton stated that they quickly identified and located the author of the threatening comment.
The suspect was arrested and subjected to a criminal investigation under the supervision of the Cantonal Prosecutor's Office in Travnik. He has been charged with the criminal offense of inciting national, racial, and religious hatred, discord, and intolerance.
The brutal threat has caused alarm among Croats in Vitez and other parts of central Bosnia, where Croats constitute a significant portion of the population in municipalities such as Kiseljak, Žepče, Fojnica, Jajce, Busovača, Novi Travnik, and others.
According to the last census in Bosnia and Herzegovina, held 13 years ago, there are about 500,000 Croats living in the country. The central Bosnia region was one of the most severe battlegrounds for Croatian suffering during the Homeland War, and many displaced people never returned to their homes.
Crimes committed by the Bosniak Army of BiH against Croats have largely gone unprosecuted. Bosniak politician Bakir Izetbegović described such events as "merely isolated incidents." Today's case, which resulted in an arrest, is one indicator of what Croatian citizens in BiH face.
