HRT's chief meteorologist forecasts continued scorching heat on Thursday, followed by a sudden weather shift with showers, thunderstorms, and possible severe storms over the weekend. The heatwave threatens to break historical records.
Croatia will not be spared from extremely hot weather tomorrow either. HRT's chief meteorologist Zoran Vakula predicts a continuation of sunny and very warm conditions on Thursday, but also brings a warning for the end of the week when a noticeable change in weather is expected. As he notes, this period could go down in the history of measurements, as it is very likely that at least in some places, the two-week period from late July to early August will be the hottest ever recorded.
"On Thursday in eastern Croatia, it will be sunny, but not entirely clear as today. With occasional moderate southeast and east winds, air temperatures will rise from a pleasant 16 to 19 degrees in the morning to an unpleasant nearly 40 °C in the afternoon," said Vakula.
The very high danger of heat-related health impacts will continue in the mostly clear central Croatia. In the centers of larger cities, temperatures will not drop below 20 degrees even at dawn, and it will already be hot before 10 a.m.
Even in Gorski Kotar and Lika, there will be no noticeable freshness. The most common maximum air temperatures will hover around 36 degrees, while in the interior of Istria they could reach up to 39 degrees. Along with the heat, there is a possibility of local afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the interior of Istria and Dalmatia, as well as in mountainous Croatia.
Although from Friday the heat will ease in part of the country, it won't completely leave us. The real change arrives on Friday and Saturday. Vakula announces: "In the rest of the week, it will be less hot inland, but on Friday and Saturday it will be changeable, with local showers, thunderstorms, and possibly severe storms. On Sunday, it will be sunnier again, with a slightly fresher morning, but also a warmer afternoon."
On the Adriatic, in addition to the continued very high danger from heat, strong bora wind gusts are expected from the second part of Friday night until Saturday morning, especially in the northern part. "It shouldn't be surprising if there are occasional warnings of possible local showers and thunderstorms. But already during the weekend, it will be calmer and sunnier again," added Vakula.
In the central Adriatic and southern Croatia, sunny weather will prevail, and the daily sea breeze will at least slightly ease the heat. The sea will be equally warm and mostly calm.
