Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency across the entire state on Sunday after devastating wildfires forced around 60,000 people to evacuate from the Spokane area. Local officials are already calling this disaster unprecedented.
Spokane Fire Chief Tom Williams told Reuters that the fire, known as the "Spokane Area Fire" and consisting of three separate blazes, is still not under control. According to data from the federal incident management team, the fire had consumed about 2,180 hectares of land by Sunday. The fires have destroyed around 600 structures, including family homes and commercial buildings.
Spokane Mayor Lisa Braun did not downplay the severity of the situation. "This is the worst natural disaster our region has ever faced," she said at a press conference. Despite the scale of the damage, officials confirmed that, fortunately, no human casualties have been reported so far.
The disaster has also caused serious power supply issues. Avista Utilities CEO Heather Rosentreter reported that around 10,000 customers in the region were without electricity on Sunday afternoon. Across Washington state, more than 101,171 hectares of land are currently burning.
Governor Ferguson spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday and requested urgent assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
